Elderly Philadelphian Dies From the Heat

Woman, 91, found dead in hot home

The death of a 91-year-old woman was blamed on the recent heat, officials said Tuesday.

Police found the unidentified woman dead in her home in the Olney Section of the city, said Philadelphia Health Department spokesman Jeff Moran.

Police were alerted to the scene by concerned neighbors, Moran said.

They entered the home to find the woman dead. There was no air conditioning in the home and all the windows were closed.

The exact location of the home wasn't made available.

With temps hovering near 90 and above, officials are urging people -- especially older people -- to drinks lots of fluids, keep the windows open and fans on and spend as much time as possible in air conditioning at places like movie theaters, community centers and libraries.

And, people should check on older or sick loved ones and neighbors.

This was the second heat death this month in the city and 11th death this summer, according to officials.
