Wing Bowl Hall of Famer busted on drug distribution charge

After spending more than a week behind bars, one of the biggest eaters in the area is out of a Gloucester County, NJ jail.

William T. Simmons, a.k.a. El Wingador, was stopped June 15 in Woodbury Heights. A search of Simmons’ 2010 Kia Soul uncovered about $8,000 worth of cocaine and $4,000 cash, according to New Jersey State Police.

Simmons, 50, was arrested and charged with drug distribution and sent to county jail on $100,000 full cash bail.

Bond was posted Monday and Simmons was released.

The man they call “El Wingador” is a legend of 94 WIP’s annual Wing Bowl -- afive-time champion of the wing-eating competition. His name is even part of the event’s Hall of Fame.

The Kia Simmons was driving was covered in a vehicle wrap heralding the his “El Wingador” nickname, police said.

He came out of retirement in recent years in search of a sixth title. He finished third with 251 wings eaten during this year’s Wing Bowl.

“It is regrettable that Mr. Simmons’ notoriety has taken a negative turn.  However, the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office works closely with other law enforcement agencies to stop the significant distribution of controlled dangerous substances that is reflected in the charges against him,” said Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton.
