Church Accuses School Board Member of Theft

A school board member has been accused of stealing more than $70,000 from the First Baptist Church of Cherry Hill.

Lynette Howard, 49, the church’s treasurer until the beginning of this year, was charged with theft by deception, according to the Cherry Hill police. The case has been under investigation since July 9 when representatives from the church first made a police report.

Howard also serves on the Cherry Hill School Board, having been elected in April after several years as a PTA member and president. School board members claim that there has never been a similar situation during Howard’s time with the school district.

Howard was notified of the charges on Monday night and she turned herself in. She was released with a summons.

The case will likely be forwarded to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, according to investigators.
