Christmas Eve Fire Claims Delco Man

Victim found under debris inside Sharon Hill home

A man died in a house fire in Sharon Hill, Pa. Monday night.

Flames broke out around 6:30 on the second floor in a front bedroom of a home on the 100 block of Ridley Avenue, according to firefighters.

As firefighters battled the blaze, multiple search teams searched for a man believed to be trapped in the home but found no one.

After the one-alarm blaze was extinguished the unidentified man was found trapped under debris and declared dead at the scene.

"From a family standpoint, I don’t think you could have anything worse than to lose your family on Christmas Eve," Sharon Hill Fire Department Chief Bill Benicke. "It’s hard any day, but especially on Christmas Eve...we just keep them in our prayers and hope they get through it."

A woman, believed to be the victim’s mother, made it out of the house, according to Benicke.

Delaware County Animal control says a dog died in the blaze but two cats were rescued.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
