Robbers Shoot Man, Steal Bank Deposit: Cops

Business owner shot while trying to deposit money at Cheltenham bank

A West Philadelphia business owner going to make a large deposit at a Montgomery County bank was shot multiple times and robbed Tuesday morning, Cheltenham Township Police said.

The shooting happened around 11:45 outside the Woori American Bank on Front Street at Cheltenham Avenue, according to police.

Peter Ly, the owner of Rainbow Kids at 52nd and Market Streets in West Philly, never made it to the bank. A dark-colored Volvo with three black men inside pulled up to Ly -- a gunman jumped out of the car and tried to put Ly in the vehicle, cops said.

A struggle ensued and Ly was shot three to four times in the leg and possibly stomach, cops said.

He was consciouses as he was taken to Einstein Hospital where he was in stable condition while undergoing surgery, police said.

One bullet hit the bank window but no one inside was hurt, officials said.

The suspects drove off west on Cheltenham Avenue with what was being called a large amount of cash, cops said.

On Friday police released two photos of the vehicle they believe the suspects used.

Anyone with information on the shooting should contact Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600.
