Deadly NJ Fire Leaves Dozens Homeless

An elderly woman was killed and about four dozen people were left homeless after a fire tore through a Burlington County apartment complex Sunday night.

The blaze started around 7:30 p.m. at the Maple Terrace Apartments on East Rudderow Avenue in Maple Shade, N.J.

An 82-year-old woman died in the blaze. She was later identified as Angelina Constantine, officials said.

Constantine was in apartment 57 when she said she saw smoke but couldn't move, Maple Shade Police said.

By the time authorities got to the scene, Constantine's unit was engulfed in flames.

The fire quickly climbed to three-alarms. It destroyed a building with 17-units leaving about 50 people homeless, fire officials said.

Three other people were hospitalized from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday afternoon but wasn't looking suspicious, police said.
