Big Rig Crashes on I-78, Hangs Off Overpass

Traffic backs up after tractor-trailer crashes near Route 412

A tractor-trailer crashed along Interstate 78 as a winter storm hit Northampton County the day after Christmas.

The big rig jackknifed just after 3 p.m. westbound near the Pa. Route 412 exit and mile-marker 67 in Hellertown, Pa. Lehigh Valley Live reported that the cab of the truck hung partially off the overpass to Saucon Park.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries and the highway remained open but traffic backed up leading up to the crash site.

It wasn't clear if wintry weather played a role in the wreck but PennDOT reduced the speed limit on the highway to 45 mph starting at 3 p.m.

It took a couple of hours, but by 5 p.m. a tow truck was able to pull the truck back onto the overpass and off the highway.

Later in the evening, a little before 10, a three-car crash shutdown I-78 westbound at Route 309, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Dispatchers say the second crash was likely due to icy/wet conditions. Expect delays and possible closures.
