Chefs across Philadelphia came together today to see who makes the best burgers in town and it was all for a good cause.
The third annual Philadelphia ‘Burger Brawl’ brought together more than twenty top burger chefs from across the city who competed for the burger crown. The charity event, founded in 2011 by Rob and Maggie Wasserman, helps raise money to build computer labs in Philly’s public elementary schools, according to organizers.
"When we began the Philadelphia Burger Brawl two years ago, we really had no idea how well the idea would be received or the amount of enthusiasm people would bring to the event," said Rob. "The combination of world-class food, the awesome urban setting of Philadelphia and the ultimate goal of supporting an educational institution and its student body come together to create an amazing experience for everyone involved."
The event took place in the outdoor lot of the Fleisher Art Memorial located at 719 Catherine Street in South Philadelphia from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. And the winners this year? Lucky's Last Chance of Manayunk was the People's Choice Winner. According to the Burger Brawl website, Lucky's winning entry was a "special meat blend, creamy peanut butter, thick-cut bacon with their homemade jelly on the side."
Meanwhile, Fat Jack's BBQ won the Judge's Choice. Their winning entry was a "thick juicy burger made with angus chuck brisket and ribeye, seasoned with a special blend of seasonings and topped with homemade BBQ sauce, cheddar jack cheese 18-hour hickory smoked texas beef brisket, Carolina pulled pork, sauteed onions, Kentucky slaw, Memphis dry rub and a dill pickle on top." This truly epic burger is called "Fat Jack's Ultimate Memphis Mauler Burger."
Aside from Lucky's this year’s participants included 500 Degrees, AllaSpina, Barbuzzo, Butcher and Singer, The Capital Grille, The Corner, Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, The Dandelion, Fat Jack’s BBQ, Chef George Sabantino, Good Dog Bar, The Industry, Kennett, London Grill, Misconduct Tavern, Percy Street Barbeque, Rex 1516, Rouge, Shake Shack, Silk City, South Philadelphia Tap Room, Spencer ETA Burger and Table 31.
More than 700 people attended last year, according to organizers.
