Allergies Blow: Tips to Survive the Season

Soon enough, everyone will be walkin’ around with teary eyes and runny noses. We're talking allergies! Here are tips from Dr. Eliot Dunsky of Allergic Disease Associates on how to survive this wretched allergy season.

The first step: If you think you are suffering from allergies, make an appointment with your doctor and get allergy testing. This way you'll know what you’re allergic to like ragweed, grass, tree pollen, etc. You’ll also want to determine if your allergies are seasonal or year-round.

When you're indoors: You may want to use HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters in your home and workspace to clean the air you breathe. And when you clean it, it’s recommended you wear a facemask.

Medication: Over the counter medication such as Claritin and Zyrtec could help. For those itchy, watery eyes Dunsky advises the use of eye drops, like Naphcon-A. There are also other forms of allergy relief, like nasal spray.

When to take medication: You should take allergy medication one hour before going outside, going to work, or to exercise, according to Dunsky.

When you're in for the day: When you’re done with the outdoors for the day, you may want to shower and change clothes to rinse your body of allergens, Dunsky said.

Timing: There are certain times of day when the pollen count is higher than others. The morning is worse for allergy sufferers, so the doc suggests you stay indoors in the early hours of the day.

Ragweed: If you suffer from ragweed allergies, steer clear of melons, cantaloupes, watermelon, honeydew and other fruits related to ragweed that could cause an itchy mouth and throat, Dunsky said.

The last step: If nothing has helped your allergies, make an appointment with your doctor.
