Nathan's Famous -- one of New York City's longest-tenured food institutions -- is celebrating a big birthday.
On May 28, the hot dog brand is set to celebrate its 100th birthday at its location on the Coney Island boardwalk. To mark the occasion, the company is offering hot dogs for 5 cents -- the same price they were when Nathan Handwerker opened the beachfront hot dog stand in 1916. The company says "legend has it" that summer the restaurant held its first hot-dog eating contest. But in fact the first hot dog contest was in 1972.
