A group of robbers were in for a surprise late Tuesday night in Mayfair.
The suspects, three men in their early twenties, walked into McNally’s tavern on the 3200 block of Brighton Street and demanded money just before the bar closed. It just so happened however that two off-duty cops were patrons of the bar that night.
After the men stole several items, including a badge, id and wallet, one officer fired at them at least three times.
The suspects then ran outside as the officer pursued. He continued to fire at them outside of the bar but the robbers managed to escape.
Police then caught up with two suspects at the 5200 block of Mascher Street in Olney. They were positively identified by several witnesses.
A third suspect later showed up at Einstein Hospital where he is currently undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound. Detectives are waiting for him to come out of surgery so that they can check to see if the bullet that struck him matches the gun of the off-duty officer.
While he is in critical condition, he is expected to survive.
Investigators recovered the stolen items and found the vehicle used as the getaway car down the block from where the suspects were arrested.
No innocent bystanders were hit during the shooting, according to police. As of now, no charges have been filed.
