That Girl: Fan Xiao

This week's That Girl Profile is Fan Xiao.

This week's Profile is  Fan Xiao of Philadelphia,Pa. Philly Fashion guru Catriona Whitehead tells us why Fan is this week's That Girl.

What I like about this look?

This look is quirky without being off-putting. She has on a simple chambray shirt dress, belted at the waist, and with a long sleeve tee underneath—a pretty normal base for an ensemble. But notice the oddball details: the spiked platform sneakers, the straw hat, the stirrup grey leggings, etc. Though each of these pieces was wildly popular in the late 80’s and early 90’s, they appear completely up to date the way she’s wearing them now. The cut of the dress, the way she cinches it in at the waist with a belt, the spikes on the sneakers, and the bomber jacket, all speak to today’s fashion. I’m impressed she’s managing to pull off a non-Ked-like sneaker with a dress. The best part about this look is that it demonstrates her fashion savvy and personality, without screaming it.

Where could this outfit be worn?

This outfit is good for everyday activities: shopping, lunching out, going to the movies, hanging out in the park, going to a museum, etc.

Where can you buy this particular look?

A chambray shirt dress can be found at Alloy, GAP, JCrew, J. Jill, LL Bean, and Joie at Nordstroms. Some subdued embellished day shoes can be found at Chinaclothingmart.com, Miu Miu, Ash at Neiman Marcus, Polyvore.com, Sammydress.com, and UES at Saks Fifth Ave. A cute straw bucket hat is best found at JCrew, Juicy Couture, and Kate Spade.

Style tip?

My one misgiving concerns the striped tote. I think it works, but I think there is something out there that could work better—a bright red tote or leather bag, maybe.
