See Art and Eat Soul Food in Brewerytown

Temporary galleries open on West Girard Avenue

What do you do with an empty storefront if there aren't any tenants lining up to rent it? Let a bunch of artists set up shop in there, ask the neighborhood restaurants to dish up some tasty grub and have a festival, of course.

A collective of artists, property owners and restaurateurs in Brewerytown is following the lead of the South Street Arts Project and trying to spruce up and create some activity and interest on West Girard Avenue by launching Art + Soul Food this Saturday, June 13. From from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. unoccupied storefronts along the the six block stretch of West Girard between Girard College and Fairmount Park will open as art galleries and performance spaces.

Each temporary gallery will have a different exhibit from photography to paintings to installations (and even taxidermy-inspired art!), plus there will be live music. As for the "soul food" part of the event, local restaurants Deborah's Kitchen and Butters Soul Food are providing the eats.

If you can't make the event, the exhibits will be in the storefronts for the next month.
