Rabid Kitten Removed from Feral Cat Colony in NJ

One of two stray kittens has tested positive for rabies, according to the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services (NJDHSS).

Offcials say the kittens were removed from a feral cat colony in Berlin Borough, Gloucester Township by two woman.

They were taken to Evesham Veterinary Clinic after one displayed worrisome behavior. There, they were euthanized and sent to the Public Health & Environmental Lab where it was determined that one of the babies was rabid.

The women who found the kittens were notified of the test results and are being treated as a precaution, said health officials.

Camden County Health Department representative urges residents to avoid contact with unfamiliar animals and keep up to date with the vaccinations of their household pets.

"Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment," said Carmen Rodriguez, liason for the Health Department.
