The winter weather is upon us, and with it comes harsh temperatures that can have an impact on your vehicle. Whether your car is old or new, there are some basic precautions you can take to ensure you and your family's safety while out on the roads this winter. Here are some simple maintenance checks you can do at home to save yourself money and a headache:
- Check fluid levels β this includes oil, transmission, coolant/antifreeze, brake, and windshield washer fluids. If any of these are running low it could have catastrophic effects on your vehicle.
- Check your air filter β a dirty or clogged filter causes low engine performance and increases fuel consumption. New air filters are easy to install and can help save on gas mileage.
- Check your battery β corrosion on your battery terminals can cause your vehicle to not start properly. If you see corrosion, or if your battery is more than three years old, you should consider getting it tested.
- Check your wiper blades β if you havenβt changed them in six months, its time for new ones. Winter blades are great for preventing snow and ice build up on your wipers and allow you to see clearly.
- Check your tires β get a digital tire pressure gage and check the tire pressure in all four tires using the recommended pressure found on the driverβs side door jamb. You want to be sure to check them after the car has been sitting for a few hours; warmer air inside the tires will cause the pressure to increase.
