PhillyDeals: Are money market funds banks – or what?

The $63 billion Reserve Fund, part of the $3-trillion-plus network of money market funds that invest in "commercial paper" loans and other conservative securities, got caught with too many bad Lehman Bros. Holdings Inc. home-loan investments on its books a year ago, and told clients it might not be able to give them back all their money.
