Officer Critically Hurt During Violent Struggle Leaves Hospital

Philadelphia Police Officer Edward Davies spent more than a month inside Temple University Hospital

Philadelphia Police Officer Edward Davies has left the hospital more than a month after being shot while struggling with a suspect inside a Feltonville corner market.

Surrounded by fellow police, the 25th District officer smiled and waved as he left Temple University Hospital along with his wife around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday. He received a police motorcycle escort for the trip home.

The 41-year-old nearly died after being shot in the stomach, below his bulletproof vest, as he struggled with a suspect inside the Almonte Mini Mart at 4th and W. Annsbury Streets on August 13.

That suspect, 31-year-old Eric Torres, allegedly fired on the officer after the two fought violently for several minutes, police said.

Police were chasing Torres after, investigators say, he fled from another officer during a traffic stop, later crashed his car and ran into the corner store.

The bullet pierced the Ofc. Davies' kidney and severed an artery forcing doctors to place him in a medically-induced coma for a time. He eventually had to undergo five surgeries to repair the damage.

Torres faces several charges including attempted murder, assault on an officer and aggravated assault. He has been held for court.
