No Charges for Principal Who Struck Student

Bucks County principal couldn’t avoid hitting student with her car: prosecutors

A suburban Philadelphia principal won't be charged in a pre-dawn accident that injured a student walking to school.

The Pennridge North Middle School principal couldn’t avoid 15-year-old Ricardo Smith as he crossed in front of her, prosecutors in Bucks County said.

Margaret Kantes, 66, was believed to have had a green light and was driving at about 17 to 22 miles per hour when the incident happened, according to prosecutors.

Smith had dark clothes on and was possibly listening to music, prosecutors said.

Smith's family filed a lawsuit over the Jan. 4 accident that accuses Kantes of speeding and perhaps running a red light.

Smith, now 16, is recovering from head, spinal, and other injuries. He was walking to Pennridge High School in Perkasie, Pa. about 30 miles north of Philadelphia.
