Nifty Fifty's

If you’re from Delaware County, or anywhere near the other 4 locations in PA and New Jersey then you know about Nifty Fifty's. Nifty Fifty's is one of the county’s best kept secrets. It’s an old time burger joint and they serve up everything delicious.

When you walk up to the establishment, you’re automatically taken back to a simpler time. From the outside, it looks like what you would imagine a fifties burger place would. Neon signs, picnic tables, old time dcor. When you walk inside, the nostalgia continues. Although the restaurant is a bit small, the atmosphere oozes personality. Whether it’s the black and white checkered walls or the bright red stools and booths or even the old school jukebox, your back in time (the waiters and waitresses even where those funny paper hats).

The staff is friendly. They seem genuinely happy to be serving you, which is refreshing when, 9 times out of 10, people are miserable to be working at all. As soon as we were seated (promptly, but that’s only because the rest of the world happened to be working. Usually, the wait is fairly long), our waitress greeted us with a smile and presented us with our menus. Traditional, American fast food. Burgers, hotdogs, cheesesteaks, fries, malts and milkshakes. They also have an extraordinary selection of speciality sodas. Think cherry vanilla or chocolate mint.

We gave our order, bacon cheeseburger, spicy fries, and chicken nuggets with cheese. Oh, and a black and white milkshake. The shake was perfect, not too thick, not too thin, just right. Less than 10 minutes later our food was on the table. Although the order wasn’t big, our waitress and the cook got everything right. For instance, the bacon on my burger was extra crispy, the way I requested. My burger was 100% beef, not the crap McDonald’s uses and the nuggets were made from real chicken. My favorite part of the meal is the spicy fries, seasoned with old bay. The kind of fries with the potato skin still on them. Everything was good, the way it is every time I go.

Of course, Nifty Fifty's sounds too good to be true. I will say that if you go at night, especially on the weekends, it gets really crowded and that makes for a long wait. And they don’t take credit cards, which is really annoying, but they do have an atm (even more annoying because it charges $2.50). But if you have the time, the cash, and the appetite for fun and good food, then Nifty Fifty's is perfect for you.
