Philly Among Best Hiking Cities: Nat Geo

Philadelphia ranks among cities like Portland and Salt Lake City.

When you think about recreational activities, Philadelphia may not come to mind, but National Geographic seems to think it should.

Philly was voted one of National Geographic’s 15 Best Hiking Cities in the Country -- praising the Wissahickon Valley.

"The cherry on top of the 9,200-acre network of green is the Wissahickon, a beloved overgrown gorge that plunges deep beneath the clamor of the city,” said one National Geographic writer.

One local hiking group leader, Sidney Goldstein, told the magazine that Wissahickon is the best thing in Philadelphia.

“With 57 miles of trails, there are plenty of opportunities to get lost,” Goldstein told the mag.

Some other unexpected honorees -- New York City's Bear Mountain and several trails in L.A. Also included on the list were a few cities that you probably expect -- Salt Lake City and Portland.
