Karoake Obscura: Sing Along to Indie Songs

There's karaoke and then there's Karaoke Obscura

Do you love karaoke, but can't stand to hear one more drunk sorority girl butcher "Sweet Caroline?" If your musical taste runs in the opposite direction from anything Top 40, have we got a karaoke for you.

Karoake Obscura takes place the first Thursday of every month (tonight!) at the Italian Market dive bar 12 Steps Down from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The songs to be sung are mostly indie rock classics of yesteryear and today. Put it this way, if you've been dying to belt out that mournful Liz Phair ballad from your college years or whine along with Morrissey and The Smiths, you're in the right place.

If that previous sentence was meaningless to you, stick with the plentiful mainstream offerings at somewhere like Yakitori Boy, which also has private rooms for rent if you'd prefer to only torment a chosen few with your heart-wrenching rendition of "Piano Man."
