Good Deed Ends in Deadly Crash

A 60-year-old Ohio man was killed Wednesday night, trying to help a disabled driver on the side of the road in Lehigh County.

A 60-year-old Ohio man was killed Wednesday night trying to help a disabled driver on the side of the road in Lehigh County.

State Police say Richard Helms was struck and killed on Interstate 78 after getting out of his car to help a fellow driver in Upper Macungie township.

Helms had pulled onto the right shoulder on I-78 Westbound just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

When he got out of his to help the other driver, Helms was hit by another vehicle that was spinning out of control, according to police.

Helms was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are asking anyone who might have seen the crash to call them.

The investigation continues.
