Funeral Set for NJ Woman Who Died While Napping Outside Wawa

Family and friends will remember a New Jersey woman who died while napping in her car between jobs.

Friends raised enough money for a funeral today and to bury 32-year-old Maria Fernandes.

Elizabeth police believe Fernandes pulled over for a nap in a Wawa parking lot after working a shift at a Dunkin Donuts in Linden.

She also worked at Dunkin Donuts in Harrison and Newark. It was a common part of Fernades' routine to take naps in public access parking lots between shifts, according to investigators.

Wawa employees called 911 after they spotted the woman sleeping in her 2011 Kia Sportage. Responding EMTs were overpowered by a chemical smell when they entered the vehicle, according to officials.

Police said it appeared Fernandes was overcome by a deadly mixture of carbon monoxide and fumes from an overturned gasoline container, but they are awaiting toxicology test results.

Fernandes' funeral will take place at 11 a.m. at the Evans-Gordon Funeral Home on Clinton Avenue in Newark. Her burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery in Linden.
