If you live in Dallas, San Diego, San Francisco, Atlanta or Austin, have a Facebook account, and logged into that Facebook account today, you might have gotten a not-so-subtle invitation to join the site’s brand-new, shopping-related Deals page.
Launched today, the Deals feature is Facebook’s answer to — and potential slayer of — buy-in bargain sites Groupon and Living Social. Like its competitors, the offers are deadline-driven and require a minimum number of pre-paid participants. Unlike its competitors, none of the offers are of the “discounted car detailing” variety — they’re all interactional, along the lines of yoga classes, hot air balloon rides, and restaurant promos. Plus, the “like” and “share” buttons make it easy to invite Facebook friends to take part in the discounted action.
It's not heavy on style though. The sole fashion-related deal happening at the moment is a four-hour “fashion tour” of San Diego.
According to Facebook's blog, partners in the deals will include Gilt City, PopSugar City, ReachLocal, Tippr, and Zozi. Right now we’re one of the test cities for Deals; massive expansion across the country is expected to follow in short order.
