Eagles Draft Firefighter In Round 1

In the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft that started last night, the Eagles selected OG Danny Watkins, a native of British Columbia who worked as a firefighter for several years before eventually attending Baylor.

Fan reaction was predictably mixed, with a standard backlash of second guessing, but there was nothing but joy amongst the enthusiastic group of uniformed NYC firefighters he brought as his own personal cheering section.

Being a Canadian, you would also naturally assume he played a lot of hockey (he did) and already has a favorite NHL team coming into a city that has a lot of its own hockey tradition. Watkins, who's the league's oldest rookie at 26, has learned a few things about diplomacy, though, telling the Inky: "I think I'm going to go with the Flyers now. My team was the Canucks, but I've got bad news for the Canucks."
