Drink Beer to Stay Warm on Saturday

This time of year, thirsty drinkers are never at a loss for festive holiday libations. There's eggnog, mulled wine, spiced rum, hard cider. But if you are stuck between a cinnamon stick and a peppermint mocha this holiday, a dark, seasonal beer is always a good decision and you can find your new favorite at this year's Cliveden Winter Beer Festival.

The Winter Beer Festival will showcase a special selection of seasonal and limited-edition holiday craft beers from the nation's top breweries. Attendees will be able to sample the special beers as well as learn about historic brewing techniques and take tours of Cliveden, one of America's most historic colonial homes.

Like many of the historic homes in Germantown, Cliveden was occupied by the British in the Revolutionary War. The soldiers seeking refuge inside its thick stone walls participated in the 1777 Battle of Germantown. The house's infamy lived on, becoming home to seven generations of Philadelphia's Chew family.

Today, Cliveden is a National Trust Historical Site. The Winter Beer Festival is more than just a showcase for the best seasonal brews from around the world. It is a chance for you to help preserve this historic site and continue the community activities that make Cliveden a vibrant historical venue. Concerts, exhibitions and neighborhood functions all take place here and add charm and storied character to Germantown or, as it's known to many residents, Freedom's Backyard.

Attendees purchasing V.I.P. passes will get an extra hour to taste Special Seasonal and Limited-Edition Christmas Beers From Around the World. Beer served during this special bonus hour will not be served at the General Session. These passes also come with a free meal ticket.

So if you are sick of cinnamon, not a fan of nutmeg and not married to mulled wine this holiday, check out some new brews in Germantown. Who knows? You may get an early Christmas present in the form of a new favorite beer.

Cliveden of the National Trust is located at 6401 Germantown Avenue. The Winter Brew Festival takes place this Saturday, December 6. The VIP session is from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and general admission is 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets for the event are between $55-$65.
