Delaware Man Fights $1,000 Water Bill

A Delaware man is fighting back after getting a water bill for more than $1,000 after he says his sprinkler system went haywire.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports Joseph Uricheck of Frankford and his wife went away for the July 4th week. When they returned they discovered their sprinkler system had dumped 100,000 gallons of water on their property.

The bill for the water: $1,049.67. Uricheck says he had programmed the sprinkler to run three times while he was gone for 90 minutes each. But at some point a neighbor noticed the sprinkler was running continuously and shut it off. Uricheck tried contacting his water provider, Artesian Water, about the bill but got nowhere.

"I'm going to go down swinging," Uricheck told the News Journal.

Artesian Vice President Joseph DiNunzio says the company's view is that the customer is responsible.
