Orchestra's New Season

Philadelphia Orchestra's 2013-2014 Season

The Philadelphia Orchestra is planning its new season with a combination of old favorites and new works for principal players.

The 2013-2014 season will include music to celebrate Richard Strauss’ 150th birthday as well as works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

The season kicks off in September with Anne-Sophie Mutter performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. There will also be a “micro-festival” of new pieces commissioned for three of the ensemble’s players.

Music director Yannick Nezet says new works are nothing new for Philadelphia.

He says premieres are a tradition going back to legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski a century ago.

The orchestra has also been selected to open Carnegie Hall's 2013-2014 season in October, a performance that will be broadcast live.
