South Philadelphia Casino Plan Gets Go Ahead

Plans to build a casino in South Philadelphia are advancing.

A committee on Monday night sent to the City Council a proposal by Cordish Cos. and Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment to build a $450 million casino complex at Ninth Street and Packer Avenue.

The hearing included allegations that Cordish-owned properties have discriminated against black employees and patrons. Cordish called it an orchestrated campaign of "outrageous and false accusations by special interests and competitors."

The committee cited support for the developer from the city's NAACP chapter and a local organization of black clergy.
