Regatta Traffic Alert

Rowers of all ages and skill sets will take to the waters of the Schuylkill River this weekend for the 2013 Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.

With the boat races bringing more than 6,500 athletes with countless fans to the banks and waters of the Schuylkill a major thoroughfare will be closed to motorists.

The Kelly Drive is going to be closed during the day due to the regatta, which has grown since two boat clubs launched the race in 1971.

A 1-1/2 mile stretch of Kelly Drive will be closed starting at 5 a.m. through 7 p.m. Saturday between Strawberry Mansion Drive and Fountain Green Drive. The same stretch of road will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Entrance to the regatta zone is by permit only so all other traffic will be detoured onto other routes including Strawberry Mansion, Fountain Green and Reservoir Drives.

Detours will be posted and delays are expected to be minimal, according to Philadelphia Police.

Expect possible delays in any case on other Schuylkill River arteries like the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) and the Martin Luther King Drive.
