Philly-Based Brewery Scores $25K Grant for Taproom, Plans Expansion Outside of Philly

A local brewery, which has plans of expanding within Philadelphia and also outside the city, has received a business-expansion grant that will go toward the completion of its upcoming on-site taproom.

St. Benjamin Brewing Co., a South Kensington-based brewery that launched in 2014, in February this year added a German-made brewhouse — which includes new tanks and pumps — that will increase the brewery's production capacity from 440 barrels annually to about 4,400.

The brewery will also begin canning its first beers, "Inca" and "Wit or Witout," on Tuesday with help from Maryland brewery River City Cannery, said co-owner Timothy Patton, who said the company expects to can around 200 cases of each brand. St. Benjamin is also amid constructing its own taproom this year, and it just received a $25,000 American Street Empowerment Zone Business Grant that will go toward the upcoming taproom's kitchen equipment and furniture for the brewery.
