First for LA: The Sunset Idea House

The Western living magazine opens the doors to a cutting-edge abode, in August.

Sunset magazine is famous for its devotion to Western living, the pleasures of the outdoors, and easy, soft-skies style.

And, of course, for that much-drooled-over, goodie-packed, techno-wonderful Idea House which pops up in the Bay Area's own Menlo Park each year.

We're not saying that a lot of magazine-reading types around Southern California might deal with bouts of Menlo Park Envy...

Wait. We're totally saying that.

Of course, domestic-devoted readers from all quarters are invited to see the dream home, but there's some journeying involved, a good six hours from Southern California. But envy no more, local Idea House fans: LA now has its first.

The Los Angeles Sunset Idea House will throw open its artfully designed doors for six weekends in a row, beginning on Friday, Aug. 1. Make that long weekends, as opening days are Friday through Sunday. And tickets? They're 18 bucks. You'll want to get yours, too, soon. Sooner than sooner than later, to put a fine point on it.

East Manhattan Beach is the location, Louie Tomaro of Manhattan Beach is the architect, and LA's DISC Interiors is behind the home's look, which is described as "eclectic, warm, modern" and the epitome of gracious-but-not-too-serious SoCal domesticity.

Some Scandinavian design elements are ever-present in the modern space, which clocks in at 4,500 feet (break that down into four bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths). The home also gives a nod to "downtown's emerging restaurant scene." Downtown is home to DISC, so there's a handy connection right there.

Look for drought-tolerant greenery dotting the home's exterior, and multiple touches that speak of SoCaliana and la vida LA. An outdoor kitchen? An edible garden? The all-important swimming pool? Yes times three.

If you're going to build a dream house with local roots, a pool is your build-out square one, one imagines.

Still feeling Menlo Park Envy? Sure, and that's okay. Sunset magazine and the Palo Alto-adjacent nook have been home-cozy partners for years. But things are looking brighter for longtime fans of the magazine who live around or near LA and would love to get their own peek of future, Western-swanky homes to come.

Bay Area, we're still buds, but SoCal is now feeling the casual-cool casa love, Sunset-style, too.
