Report: James Spader Could Star in “The Office”

A familiar face from the ‘80s could possibly be stepping into “The Office.”

James Spader is currently negotiating to be in the NBC sitcom, according to sources as told by The Hollywood Reporter. The star of movies such as “Less Than Zero” and “Pretty in Pink,” and most recently on TV’s "Boston Legal," had appeared on “The Office”’s season finale as one of several contenders for Michael Scott’s job.

The news was first reported by Entertainment Weekly; no deal has been finalized yet. According to  sources, Spader, who played Robert California on the finale, could even land a bigger job on the show: CEO of Sabre, the parent company of Dunder Mifflin, thus succeeding Kathy Bates.

With that in mind, it leaves the manger position vacated by Scott, formerly played by Steve Carrell, possibly open for someone already on the show to fill. Some of those in the cast who expressed interest included Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms and Craig Robinson. Catherine Tate, a British comedian, has also been reported to be a possible candidate for the job.
