A Surging Santorum Perfects the Sweater Vest

Letterman ribbed the frontrunner du jour for his attire and his stance on gay rights

Rick Santorum's projected triple victory Tuesday night propelled him not just to the front of the GOP pack but also to the front of the late night monologues.

The former Pennsylvania senator might do well not to take his enviable momentum for granted, though, said David Letterman on "The Late Show" Wednesday.

"That's when you get in trouble, when you start feeling cocky. Rick Santorum already has ordered and is being fitted for an inaugural sweater vest," he joked.

But his next joke on Santorum was a little more pointed.

"Santorum's victory proves that old adage about politics, 'Give voters what they want' — in this case, intolerance and homophobia," he said.

And since Santorum, the holy-roller of the Republican field, doesn't have much scandal in his background to mock, Letterman invoked an old political chestnut from last year.

"Last night, CNN introduced something called the Caucus Cam. The Caucus Cam. That's what got Anthony Weiner in trouble," he remarked.
