Scorsese to Direct “Gambler” Remake — with DiCaprio?

Hollywood heavyweight director Martin Scorsese is reteaming with screenwriter William Monahan for a remake of the '70s drama "The Gambler" for Paramount Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramount Pictures has slated the latter-day auteur and Monahan, who wrote Scorsese's 2006 crime movie and Best Picture-winner "The Departed," to head the remake. Producing the film will be the original 1974 movie's producer, Irwin Winkler.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio wants Leonardo DiCaprio for the lead role.

The original film, about an admired New York college professor with a crippling gambling addiction, was adapted from a Fyodor Dostoyevsky novel and starred James Caan.

Scorsese established himself back in the '70s, too, with now-iconic films like "Taxi Driver" and went on to make a career of mafia movies, period pieces and and gritty crime dramas.

DiCaprio has starred in five of his movies so far — including "The Departed" and last year's "Shutter Island," for which he reprised the former's Boston accent.
