‘The American' Tops Labor Day Box Office

George Clooney's thriller "The American" overtook Robert Rodriguez's controversial gore-fest "Machete" to win the top spot at the box office for the long Labor Day weekend.

"The American," about an assassin on his last assignment tempted by two beautiful women raked in $12.9 million, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Last week's box office winner and heist film, "Takers" held onto the No. 2 spot earning $11.4 million.

"Machete," starring Danny Trejo looked to be a contender to takeover the weekend's top box office spot on Friday.  But the star power of Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez, and Robert Dinero could not stop the movie from slipping into the No. 3 slot at the box office.  In its opening weekend "Machete" was just edged out by "Takers" earning $11.3 million.

Trailing behind the top three were Drew Barrymore and Justin Long's romantic comedy "Going the Distance" bringing in $6.9 million and the frightening "Last Exorcism" made $7.5 million.
