Filming of “The Hobbit” Begins in February

After being in development hell, it looks like the movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s “The Hobbit” will now become a reality.

The Associated Press is reporting that the two-part prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy will begin shooting in February with “Rings” director Peter Jackson at the helm, according to a statement. There were no details available about release dates.

The production of the films has stalled because of issues regarding unions as well as the reorganization of Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. Originally Guillermo del Toro was slated to direct the prequels but left the production in May because of the delays.

"Exploring Tolkien's Middle Earth goes way beyond a normal filmmaking experience," said Jackson, who co-wrote the screenplays, in the release. "We're looking forward to re-entering this wondrous world with Gandalf and Bilbo."

According to the AP, “The Hobbit” movies will be shot in 3-D. "It's an all-immersive journey into a very special place of imagination, beauty and drama," Jackson said.
