Saturday Night Live

“SNL” Recap: Taraji P. Henson Has Made It, Baby!

Taraji P. Henson has officially made it.

Henson, who has finally earned a place in the spotlight as Cookie Lyon on "Empire" after a decades-long acting career, relished the chance to absorb some Studio 8H magic in her very first "Saturday Night Live" hosting appearance.

“Being here on ‘Saturday Night Live’ just means so much to me,” Henson said in her opening monlogue. “Because it proves that after 20 years in show business, white people finally know who I am!”

And with a mic in hand, Henson flashed her vocal talent by singing “We Made It,” gospel-themed musical number all the other jobs she might have pursued had she not succeeded as an actress. (Sample lyric: “I coulda passed out samples in a grocery store / On ‘Law and Order’ I coulda played a corpse.”)

Some cast members even joined her onstage for a few lyrics.

Kenan Thompson: “I coulda been the oldest cast member on ‘Goodburger 7!’”

Pete Davidson: “I coulda been a normal, well-adjusted college sophomore!”

Leslie Jones: “I coulda straight-up been in jail.” (The music stopped.) “Seriously, I have done some stuff.”

Henson’s guest appearances weren’t limited to Studio 8H. In a “when-Cookie-met-Cookie” moment, Henson’s “Empire” character Cookie Lyon faced off with Elmo, Ernie — and, yes, Cookie Monster — on a promo for “Sesame Street.”

“You want to share my cookie?” Cookie Monster asked Lyon.

“No, baby. Cookie don’t share,” Lyon cooed back, before om-nom-nom-ing her way through the whole crumbly mess.

And in a livestream of “How 2 Dance With Janelle,” YouTube star Janelle (Sasheer Zamata) and her pal Teddy (Kyle Mooney) were interrupted by Janelle’s mom (Henson) — who showed off a few moves of her own.

“Now let me show you how a REAL woman dances!” she cackled. “You gotta pop it! Now how does that feel?”

“It hurts everything,” whined Janelle.

“Ha! Then you’re doing it right, baby!”

In the cold open sketch, a fiercely determined Hillary Rodham Clinton (Kate McKinnon) attempted to announce her presidential candidacy via cameraphone, with a few a tips from her campaign staffer Christina (Vanessa Bayer).

“Citizens!” a wild-eyed Clinton growled into the camera with a feral glare. “You will elect me. I will be your leader.”

The solo performance was short-lived.

“Did someone say women everywhere?!” brayed Bill Clinton (longtime “SNL” presidential impersonator Darrell Hammond), as he strolled into the camera frame. “Isn’t it amazing phones can take video now? If they could have done that in the 90s, I’d be in jail.”

The former first lady cackled at her husband. “Aren’t we such a fun, approachable dynasty?”

Hammond wasn’t the only surprise appearance.

On the eve of the fifth-season premiere of HBO’s cultural juggernaut “Game of Thrones,” a video short introduced one of the show’s new locales: the “Boyz n the Hood”-like South Centros, featuring none other than Jaime “Kingslayer” Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).

In the video starring Ice Cube (Thompson), a young nobleman (Jay Pharoah) falls in love, albeit briefly, with a noblewoman (Zamata) — only to fall prey to the scheming Lannisters.

“Don’t hate the slayer, hate the game,” Lannister snarls from atop his horse.

“House Lannister represent!” shouts his squire (Jones).

And on “Weekend Update,” co-host Michael Che welcomed frequent guest Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy (Bayer) — and got a surprise visit from Jacob’s podiatrist dad (“SNL” alumnus Billy Crystal).

Also appearing on the “Weekend Update” set: eccentric artist Cecilia Gimenez (McKinnon), who introduced co-host Colin Jost to her oft-derided sculpture of Lucille Ball.

Musical guest Mumford and Sons visited Studio 8H, leaving behind their banjos and upright basses and forging ahead with a hard-driving electric sound in “The Wolf.”

The British folk-rockers next performed “Believe,” also off their upcoming album “Wilder Mind,” which debuts May 4.

“SNL” returns May 2 with host Scarlett Johanssen.
