Sarah Silverman Writes Obituary for Her Dog

Comedian Sarah Silverman wrote an "obituary type thing" for her loyal dog who died this week, cracking jokes between descriptions of tender and heartwrenching moments.

Silverman's best friend was a dog named Duck.

She met Duck about 14 years ago in a no-kill animal shelter in Van Nuys, according to her post on the celebrity blogging website WhoSay. Duck had been caught in South Los Angeles with no collar or tags, estimated to be about 5 years old.

"Since then we have slept most every night together (and many lazy afternoons.)," she wrote.

Duck's condition deteriorated in recent years. His senses dulled and arthritis pained him, but Silverman wrote she and her veterinarian were able to keep him comfortable.

"Recently, however, he stopped eating or drinking," she wrote. "He was skin and bones and so weak. I couldn't figure out this hunger strike. Duck had never been political before."

She soon decided it was time to let him go.

Silverman described lying on the bed with Duck, cuddling the old dog and telling him how loved he is as a veterinarian euthanized him.

"Fourteen years," Silverman wrote. "My longest relationship. My only experience of maternal love. My constant companion. My best friend. Duck."
