Despite Documentary's Success, Netflix Has No Season 2 Plans for ‘Making a Murderer'

Bad news, "Making a Murderer" fans.

Netflix told NBC Chicago the movie streaming service has no plans to release a season two, despite the documentary’s big success.

However, Netflix did say it would "certainly look at the story as it continues to unfold."

The filmmakers behind the documentary also discussed the potential future of the series at a news conference on Sunday.

"(Since the launch of the series) we've had several conversations, telephone conversations, with Steven Avery," Laura Ricciardi said. "And we did record those calls with an eye towards including them in any episodes, should there be any future episodes. But we've not returned to Wisconsin in the past four weeks."

"This story is ongoing," Moira Demos added. "These cases are open, but it's real life. You don't know what's going to happen. So we are ready to follow these. If there are significant developments, we will be there."

"Making a Murderer" depicts the story of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man who was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and imprisoned for 18 years before DNA evidence exonerated him in 2003. Avery went on to sue Manitowoc County, the former district attorney and county sheriff for $36 million.

Soon after county officials were deposed in the lawsuit, Avery was accused of murder in the killing of Teresa Halbach, a 25-year-old photographer.

He was ultimately convicted of murder and of illegally possessing a firearm, but was found not guilty of mutilating a corpse.

The series was filmed over 10 years by Ricciardi and Demos, two Columbia University film school graduates, and has drawn powerful reactions from viewers.
