Broadway Lights to Be Dimmed for James Gandolfini

James Gandolfini, 51, died of a heart attack last week in Rome

Broadway theaters will dim the lights of their marquees Wednesday evening to honor actor James Gandolfini.

The Broadway League said Gandolfini, well known for his role as a New Jersey mob boss on the HBO series "The Sopranos," was also a celebrated stage actor.

He was nominated for a best actor Tony award in 2009 for "God of Carnage."

"James Gandolfini was a consummate actor who brought individuality to each role and inspired a true connection with the audience," said Charlotte St. Martin, The Broadway League executive director. "Whether on screen or on a Broadway stage, he made every role believable and seemingly effortless."

Theaters will dim their lights for one minute at 8 p.m. The Broadway League said it has dimmed its lights in honor of about a dozen people in the last year, including Gore Vidal and Jean Stapleton.

A private wake in Gandolfini's hometown of Park Ridge, N.J. is being held Wednesday, and his funeral is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York.
