Rosie Scores One-Hour Variety Special On NBC

After much speculation about a return to primetime TV, Rosie O’Donnell is indeed headed to NBC – at least, for one night.

“Rosie’s Variety Show” will air on Wednesday, November 26 on NBC, the network announced on Thursday.

The live hour-long variety special will be broadcast from New York on the night before Thanksgiving and will feature a “wide array of celebrity guests, musical acts, comedy skits and a giant primetime giveaway,” according to NBC.

“This is a dream come true for any performer. Old time variety, live from New York with a nod to Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett and memories of Sonny and Cher,” Rosie said in a statement released by the network.

Previous reports suggested Rosie was in talks with NBC for her own primetime series, which would follow the format of a variety show.

And while today’s announcement focuses on a one-time show, Variety suggested the special could serve as a precursor to a regular series for Rosie.

If “Rosie’s Variety Show” were to turn into a series, it would mark Rosie’s first regular TV gig since her days as a co-host on “The View.”

The project also marks a reunion of sorts for Rosie and NBC, many of the network’s affiliates carried the Telepictures (Warner Bros.)-produced “Rosie O’Donnell Show” for six seasons from 1996 – 2002.
