On The Download: Faith Hill's ‘Joy To The World'

Not everyone likes country music, and those that don’t shouldn’t be dissuaded from Faith Hill’s “Joy to the World,” simply because it’s the genre in which Faith is best known for frolicking.

For starters, Faith left her country twang at the door.

Recorded over the summer, Faith opted for an old-fashioned, crisp, big band fronting vocal style, singing faithful renditions of Christmas classics like “Holly Jolly Christmas,” and “Winter Wonderland.”

On “Holly Jolly Christmas,” Faith sings with echoes of Judy Garland-style gusto atop sparkling brass, and a jazzy piano. And the more religious numbers like “Silent Night, Holy Night,” are conducted serenely, seriously and full of the kind of warmth worth listening to while sitting around the glow of the Christmas tree.

Faith’s love of the holiday season is apparent across the album. She told the Tennessean earlier this season, “I wanted it to feel like snow. I wanted it to feel like throwing your coat on and running outside and playing in the snow and rushing off to the store to get the last Christmas gift.”

Polished, professional, classic and gorgeous, Faith got her Christmas album right.
