Kate & Leo Keep Titanic Survivor Afloat

The "Titanic" star couple pays 98-year-old survivor's nursing home bills

Kate and Leo aren't going to let this Titanic survivor drown.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in the 1997 blockbuster "Titanic," are chipping in to pay the steep nursing home bills of the last survivor of the shipwreck, the Independent reported.

Millvina Dean, the youngest passenger on the fated ship, was just nine weeks old when she boarded the liner in 1912 -- and at 98 years old, she's now facing a mountain of medical bills that could drown her in debt.

Photographer Don Mullan appealed to the Hollywood stars publicly last week to help Dean overcome the thousands of dollars of debt, and Winslet, DiCaprio and director James Cameron stepped up to the plate to raise the funds.

"An old woman, still trying to survive, this time from drowning under the weight of meeting her nursing home expenses, simply wasn't right, especially given the enormous sums of money the story of Titanic had generated in the recent past," Mullan said as he challenged the Hollywood elite to come to Dean's rescue.

The "Titanic" actors and director made a "considerable donation" to the Millvina Dean Fund that amounted to thousands of dollars, Mullan told the Independent.

The fund now has more than $30,000 in its reserves -- and Dean should be able to live out the rest of her live in peace, Mullan said.

Winslet and DiCaprio also co-starred in last year's "Revolutionary Road."
