    NEWSLETTERS

For the past few years, Katie Holmes has been sporting chic short hair. So she certainly turned heads last week when she showed up for the Tokyo premiere of "Valkyrie" with luscious long locks, reminiscent of when she and Tom first started dating!

Of course, even a superstar like Mrs. Tom Cruise can't grow tons of tresses overnight! It's all thanks to the magic of hair extensions. Kacey Welch, extension specialist at Neil George Salon in Los Angeles, gives us an extension analysis!

"The two most popular types of hair extensions are individual extensions and wefts. Individual extensions (20-50 strands) are bonded to small sections of your own hair to give it length. A weft looks like a curtain of hair attached together at the top, but flow free at the bottom. Weft tracks are woven into your hair, attached to your hairline to give length and volume."

According to Kacey, choosing which kind of extensions to get "depends on your natural hair type. If you have darker hair or a thicker texture, wefts tend to be easier to blend in and make it look more natural… If you have naturally thin or fine hair, individual extensions will not only add length but also give the hair more body and movement."

While Kacey believes Katie used individual extensions, Kacey's been using wefts on a lot of clients lately because they last longer and you can reuse the hair. Plus, they are slightly more cost effective. "For individual extensions, the cost could range from $300-$600 and the service ranges from $600-$1500. For wefts, the cost can range from $200-$600 and service will cost about $300-$700." Both kinds are made out of real human hair.

While these are quite pricey, there are alternatives! According to Kacey, "You can look into clip-in extensions that you can buy at a wig shop or hair supply. You can clip in these extensions and take them out at home yourself." Check out POP - Put on Pieces, a line which offers synthetic hair starting under $20 and sets of human hair pieces for approximately $200.
