“This Means War” Trailer Looks Like “Mr. & Mr. Smith”

We were so dispirited by the people who'd agreed to star in this one that we'd almost completely pushed it out of our brain. But with the trailer for "This Means War," starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, there's no denying the film's existence any longer.

"This Means War," directed by the unparalleled auteur known as McG, tells the story of two besties at the CIA who one day realize they're dating the same woman, inspiring the men to employ "their incomparable skills and an endless array of high-tech gadgetry against their greatest nemesis ever - each other," in the words of the synopsis.

Watching the trailer it's hard not to be reminded of the Pitt-Jolie homewrecker "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," as the film unspools as an ironically serious, super-slick actioner doubling as a romcom. It's a testament to this project that it was originally envisioned as Chris Rock/Martin Lawrence vehicle in 2001, before it was recast for Sam Worthington and Bradley Cooper, before... Pine and Hardy deserve better than decade-old leftovers. And remember how exciting Witherspoon was when she first blew ourt minds in "Freeway," "Pleasantville," "Election" and "American Psycho"? Damn you, Hollywood!

The whole thing just made us kinda sad--though we'll confess to laughing at the bit towards the end at the expense of Chelsea Handler playing Witherspoon's BF.

"This Means War" opens Feb. 17.
