Eagles Cut Former 2nd-Round Pick Jarrett

Birds give up on 2nd-year safety

So long Jaiquawn Jarrett.

The Eagles cut the 2011 second-round pick Tuesday to clear roster space for wide receiver Mardy Gilyard.

Jarrett, who played his college ball at Temple, never quite caught on to the complexities of playing safety in the NFL and became expendable with the emergence of Kurt Coleman and the recovery of Nate Allen from injuries. He recorded zero tackles after being active for Sunday's 17-16 win over the Browns.

In total, he suited up 13 times in his one-plus season with Philly.

By cutting Jarrett, the Eagles must be confident that backup safety Colt Anderson will be healthy enough by this weekend to be active against the Ravens. Otherwise only newcomer David Sims will backup Allen and Coleman.

Gilyard gives the Eagles a safety blanket at receiver.

Per CSNPhilly.com:

With Jeremy Maclin (hip), Jason Avant (wrist) and Riley Cooper (collarbone) nursing injuries, the Eagles needed to add depth at receiver...

Gilyard was among the Eagles’ final cuts on Aug. 31. He caught nine passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason.

The Eagles also cut practice squad tight end Chase Ford and signed tight end Derek Carrier to take his place. Carrier was amongst the Raiders last cuts before the season.
