Snow Moves Out, Dangerous Cold and Wind Move In

The snow moved out but the bitter cold is moving in along with dangerously strong winds. A combination of arctic air and strong wind gusts will lead to the coldest air so far this season.

Valentine's Day Snow

Snow moved into the region early Saturday afternoon and lasted throughout the night. The first round of snow cleared out early Saturday evening. But a second, more intense round, known as a "snow squall" moved through the area later on. During the second round, there were periods of heavy snow causing white-outs, low visibilities and dangerous travel.

The system moved out of the Philadelphia area around 10:30 p.m. The system moved through the Jersey Shore before leaving the region around midnight.

While the snow is gone, the wind is now picking up. A high wind warning went into effect 10 p.m. Saturday and will last until 2 p.m. Sunday.

"Wind will pick up overnight tonight and continue until Sunday afternoon," said NBC10 First Alert Meteorologist Brittney Shipp.

Wind gusts by Sunday morning will be near 55 mph, causing the potential for power outages.

Frigid Temperatures Return

The high will only be around 15 degrees Sunday. The heavy wind gusts will make it feel even colder. Wind chill temperatures will be between -15 and -30 degrees Sunday morning and stay below zero during the day.

Wind Chill Temperatures Sunday at 7 a.m.

  • Philadelphia: -15 degrees
  • Wilmington: -16 degrees
  • Dover: -14 degrees
  • Millville: - 14 degrees
  • Cape May: -8 degrees
  • Atlantic City: -12 degrees
  • Mount Holly: -15 degrees

  • Mount Pocono: -21 degrees
  • Lancaster: -18 degrees

Temperatures will get even more extreme overnight Monday as they plummet to the low single digits. The forecast for Monday morning for Philadelphia is 1 degree, which would break the previous record of 2 degrees. If that holds, it will be the coldest start to the morning in our area in more than 100 years.
