Philadelphia

Another Frigid Night Followed by Saturday Snow

On the heels of the coldest morning in 21 years, snow will move into our area Saturday.

NBC10 meteorologist issued a First Alert Thursday because of the bitter cold and it will continue through Saturday's storm, said Chief Meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz.

"We issued the First Alert because we'll see a significant snow storm in the middle of the weekend when a lot of people are out and about," said Glenn. "Because of the recent dangerous cold, the roads are extremely cold and snow will stick to them immediately."

Overnight Friday, temperatures will stay nearly as cold as they were Thursday night with the high hovering around 9 degrees in the city and 2 in the suburbs. As you wake up Saturday, temps will be in the teens and it will be sunny, but fast forward to early afternoon, and that's when the snow starts moving in.

It's move into our area from the west around noon and quickly stick to untreated surfaces thanks to the frigid cold, Glenn said.

The Philadelphia/I-95 corridor will see anywhere from 1" to 3" while areas north and west of the city could see as many as 6" before the precipitation turns over to an icy mix, making for even more treacherous driving conditions.

As temperatures warm through the evening, the storm will end with rain that will last through early Sunday morning.

Following the early a.m. rain, it'll be mostly cloudy with the chance of sun in the afternoon -- the best news? We could reach 40 degrees!

The bad news? Temps above freezing will cause melting and slush which will refreeze overnight Sunday into Monday as another bitter cold blast hits the area hard, said Glenn.

Monday's high will be 23, but with gusty winds, it'll feel like zero.
