A swath of Philadelphia is going car-free for a day in September.
Philly.com reports that since Pope Francis' visit shut down a chunk of Center City streets last year, a group of bicyclists and pedestrians have been pushing for more car-free days.
City officials say the first Philly Free Streets event is scheduled for Sept. 24. That Saturday, officials say they will temporarily close a predetermined route from South Street to Fairmount Park to vehicular traffic.
City spokesman Mike Dunn says the day will include events focused on fun and education programming, physical activity, history, arts, culture and sustainability.
"The planned route will generally run the length of South Street winding its way through Fairmount Park ending at the Belmont Plateau," Dunn said in a statement.
The plan is to close the roads for about five hours, said officials.
